LA26RM_121: "NASW-LA Baton Rouge Region Sponsored Workshop" FREE for Members. Topic: An Exercise in Empathy: Using Empathy to Guide Practice.  Presented by: Michelle Fuller- Harris ,MSW,LCSW,BACS,CIMHP.  During this presentation participants will:  (1) Define and differentiate among the core components of empathy: cognitive empathy (understanding another's perspective), emotional empathy (sharing another's feelings), and compassionate empathy (feeling moved to help).   (2) Distinguish between empathy and sympathy in social work practice.  (3) Identify the ethical standards related to empathetic practice within the National Association of Social Workers (NASW) Code of Ethics. Specifically, THE Importance of Human Relationships, The Dignity & worth of Person, & Social Workers Ethical responsibility to Broader society.  (4) Utilize empathy as a key tool to identify and to challenge potential barriers to empathetic engagement, such as personal biases, assumptions, cultural variants. Use this Reflection to identify own levels of empathetic awareness as well as areas for growth.  (5) Practice empathy skills, such as active and empathetic listening, reflection.  (6) Discuss empathy and its relevance to Social Work practice, how it affects practice, as well as how lack of empathy can be detrimental to social work practice.  (7) Utilize discussion & learnings from a hands-on Empathy Activity to get back to the basics of social work practice.  (8) This workshop will fulfill 1.5 of the 3 hours of Professional Ethics as mandated and required by the Louisiana State Board of Social Work Examiners. The workshop aims to help participants by raising awareness of empathy as it is woven through the NASW Code of Ethics. Further, it will help to develop self-awareness and self-acceptance which assists in increasing deeper connections with self and others.   2.00 Ethical hours.  Pre-registration is required to be awarded CEU credit.
