The National Association of Social Workers - Louisiana Chapter (NASW-LA), is heartbroken by the horrific shooting that occurred on Sunday morning in Shreveport. We extend our deepest condolences to the families and loved ones of the victims during this time of unimaginable grief. Our hearts are with the entire Shreveport community and the people of Louisiana as we collectively process yet another act of senseless violence.

As social workers, we are very aware of the devastating ripple effects of gun violence on individuals, families, and all of our communities. This tragedy underscores the urgent need for common-sense legislative action. NASW-LA remains steadfast in its advocacy for stricter universal background checks and the implementation of Red Flag laws (Extreme Risk Protection Orders). These measures are vital tools for preventing individuals in crisis from accessing firearms and protecting the public from foreseeable harm.

Furthermore, we must address the intersection of gun violence and domestic instability. Social workers play a critical role on the front lines, trained to recognize the early warning signs of domestic violence and provide life-saving intervention and support. We call for increased investment in behavioral health resources and domestic violence prevention programs to ensure that those at risk receive the help they need before a crisis escalates into violence.
